Austin— The dynamic food scene of Austin is expanding and diversifying, with women grill masters demonstrating their culinary prowess alongside deliciously fluffy Asian desserts. This latest update comes in an effort to bridge a gap in gender representation in the food industry while providing Austinites with a variety of delightful flavor experiences.
You Grill Girl, spearheaded by feminist hospitality nonprofit Les Dames d’Escoffier Austin, is running a popular outdoor cooking event at Franklin Barbecue on April 25. This celebration of women and non-binary chefs redefines the traditional image of the grill master, a male-dominated role. Participating chefs include Abby Love, Sarah McIntosh, Laura Sawicki, Amanda Turner, along with Franklin Barbecue’s Sarah Petmecky, Amie Brown, and Theo Nesland. This event is a demonstration of ambition and talent, painting a vivid image of the potential and achievements of non-male chefs who, despite composing only about a fifth to a quarter of the profession, are pushing boundaries and blazing trails.
For those with a sweet tooth, Sweet Memes now delivers fluffy Asian desserts in Round Rock. As an Asian bakery, its mouthwatering menu includes fluffy soufflé pancakes and stacked crepe cakes. As a grand splash of diversity to Austin’s dessert scene, it also brings an array of sweet beverages ranging from fruity teas to creative coffee, and boba combinations to its eager clientele.
The food scene in Austin continues to evolve with the opening of Casa Bianca in the former Eastside Tavern space. Focusing on Italian-American cuisine, this new establishment invites patrons to a culinary experience seasoned with the Japanese influence of Executive Chef Joseph Zoccoli, former chef at Uchi.
Adding to the blend of flavors, Austin embraces two sister concepts with distinct styles – sandwich shop Manny’s and cocktail lounge Powder Room. The same team recently brought the retro diner Toasty Badger to Austinites.
Galactic enthusiasts can now extend their astronomical pursuits to the refreshing realm of cocktails. As part of Global Astronomy Month, Otopia Rooftop Lounge invites customers to indulge in solar-inspired cocktails. With the UT Austin’s Astronomy Department receiving 15 percent of the drink sales for the month, now one can support science while sipping a celestial concoction.
Addressing the need for vegans to enjoy a sundae, Gati Ice Cream is introducing two new flavors for a month starting April 25. With its base of coconut cream, the vegan ice cream presents Strawberry Shortcake and Salted Caramel Cookie Crumble, both creatively served sundae style.
This progressive and expansive food scene only solidifies Austin’s place as a culinary hotspot, offering a deliciously diverse palate of experiences for food lovers of all kinds.
